Ancillary Task - Audience Verbal Feedback

SCRIPT:

Ancillary Task - Audience Verbal Feedback

In today’s post I will be discussing my verbal questionnaire and its feedback. The feedback which I have gained will be vital for my further construction stages as it has clearly portrayed the end users requirements and needs.

The first question which I have verbally asked my audience was focused on the digipak as well as the advert layout. Within this question I have targeted my audience to identify any features from the progressive house genre within my layout design.  Within my draft idea creation for the layout, I have been mainly inspired by my codes & conventions research that I believe has signified the vital parts of Progressive House genre such as the track list, barcode and legal statement placement within the back cover or the positioning of typography and graphic imagery within the front cover of the digipak. Within my responses I have gained positive feedback from my audience in the form of comments such as “very well structured”, “not overcrowded for the eye making it pleasing and eye-catching” as well as “I believe that the positioning of content within the digipak and advert represents the stereotypical expectations of such genre”. Within my planning, I have taken into account the placement of content which I have seen within examples of work from artist such as Zedd and Avicii and applied similar structure to my work. Overall I believe that my proposed ancillary task layout seemed quite appealing to my audience therefore I will choose to follow the set flat-plan within my construction stages.

I have based the second question around the planning of the ancillary task within the ‘visualising initial thoughts’ post where I have experimented and placed my initial thoughts onto production. The experimentation has allowed me to refine my content in terms of structure, colour as well as imagery used. As a form of feedback I have shown my audience the work which I have constructed based around typography overlay, background image editing and geometrical shape construction. At first I have asked my audience which of the constructed typography overlays matched their perception of Progressive House genre. All of the respondents have unambiguously replied that the final attempt at constructing the typography texture has been considered to be the most successful due to the use of colour and sharp texture which the audience states that it “Reflects the expectations of club settings where lights and the dance floor play a vital part of the atmosphere”. Moving onto the background imagery which I have experimented with in order to portray the surreal element within my work, I have asked my audience “How they feel when looking at the photograph due to the development which I have carried out”. The audience has specified that the image “Transferred them to a parallel universe” and “emphasised a magical / mystical mood within the image”. As a result I believe that the image was very effective at portraying the desired mood therefore in the eyes of the audience, the image has been seen as suitable for the background of my digipak and advert. As part of my visualising experimentation, I have taken inspiration from online video tutorials and attempted a go at constructing a geometrical shape which has been filled with an image overlay. At first I have attempted to implement a photograph of my actress within the shape which in my opinion did not suit the overall concept of the digipak and advert. As a result of this I have further experimented and applied the same texture overlay over the shape as I have used within my typography. I have shown my experimentation journey to the audience in order for them to conclude on the graphic content where they have commented “I believe that the vibrant texture really emphasises the shape as well as the surreal element within the ancillary task”. Concluding on the feedback from this specific stage of my planning and construction, I believe that the audience feedback has backed up my design choices in order to meet my expected outcome.

The third question which I have asked the audience was based around my “typography research” post, where I have collected a number of fonts that I believe suit the Progressive House genre. Within my research I have considered the fact that most Progressive House digipaks included two types of font style; bold and thin. As a result of this I have collected a number of fonts which has allowed the audience for direct visual comparison. Within my feedback I have been told that the fonts which are most suitable for my digipak are Bebaus Neue and Dolce Vita due to their sharp and clear structure. The audience has specified the appropriate fonts for my digipak therefore I will take this into account and use them within my production.

Within my planning stages I had to distinguish a suitable name for my digipak therefore I have used the feedback opportunity and asked the audience for a word which reminds them of Progressive House genre. I have been given a multitude of titles, some of them being “Zone”, “Amplitude” and “Tessellate”. Out of all of the suggested titles, I have found “Tessellate” to be the most successful due to it representing the overall structure of nightclubs where Progressive House would be present. As a result I have chosen “Tessellate” to be my digipak title as I believe it is very catchy and clearly presents the dynamic nature of the genre.

In order to successfully construct the track list for the back of my digipak cover I have constructed a proposal list of 20 tracks and portrayed it to my audience. The song titles which I have come up with have portrayed a rather energetic mood which is tailored for the adrenaline fuelled lifestyle of my target audience.  I have used the proposed track list as a base for my audience, for them to narrow down the list portraying only the catchiest titles. As a result of this I have been provided with the best 11 titles from the list. I believe that by having 11 song titles within my track list I have made it optimal for my progressive house genre as the track lists mainly range from 10-15 songs. The song titles which I will include within my track list are as below:
  • Beautiful now Ft. John Bellion
  • Tidal Waves
  • Midnight Run
  • Powerful Ft. Ellie Goulding
  • Beyond Life
  • Circles
  • Without You
  • Runaway
  • Movements
  • Flight
  • Blue Skies

I have implemented “Beautiful Now Ft John Bellion” as one of my song titles due to the fact that it was the song used within my music video, therefore creating a clear link between my digipak and the music video. Additionally I believe song titles such as “Tidal Waves”, “Movements” and “Blue Skies” have really emphasised the surreal element which is mainly portrayed within the progressive house genre.

Concluding, I believe that the verbal questionnaire has allowed me to refine my ideas within my digipak and advert planning as with the help of my audience I have been allowed to specify any areas which the audience would like to see within the digipak and advert therefore causing my work to be effective and match their expectations. As a next stage, I will apply the feedback into my construction and create a professional digipak and advert for my chosen genre.
